The program's School Nurse leads the health office and is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, assessing and evaluating the health services of the children in the preschool program.
QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an accredited college, Degree in Nursing Current NYS Registered Professional Nurse License Experience in working with young special needs children Knowledge of principles and accepted trends of nursing as well as the intellectual, social and emotional growth patterns of children ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES Directs the day to day performance duties of the LPNs in the preschool program.
Obtains health and developmental histories of the students.
Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.
Screens and observes the students on a regular basis to detect health needs including vision, hearing and growth.
Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians.
Conducts parent conferences and maintains the liaison between physicians, parents and staff.
Makes recommendations to physician and parents on health needs of individual students.
Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention, reports to parents, program personnel, physicians and other agencies on student health matters.
Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
Implements program policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
Assists in monitoring and evaluating student absenteeism.
Conducts training for staff and parents related to health and hygiene.
Assists program personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in the school.
Participates in staff development and in-services on topics of Universal Precautions, Infection Control, HIV/AIDS, CPR, child protection, dispensing medications.
Has a willingness to work with other professionals to develop a team approach.
JOB FUNCTIONS Certified in CPR.
Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
Ability to administer diagnostic tests with efficiency and accuracy.
Ability to interpret results appropriately taking into account developmental norms, child's progress or lack of progress and any other pertinent information helpful in determining service recommendations.
Demonstrate knowledge of current literature and trends relating to profession.
